Black Sails – So Who Are These Founders Of Nassau?


In Black Sails, STARZ gritty look at golden age piracy, we have seen many familiar faces, Ned Low, Charles Vane, Anne Bonny, Calico Jack Rackham and now Edward “Blackbeard” Teach. All real people who sailed the caribbean theiving and murdering. For the first time, these characters have been brought together and portrayed as real people rather than charactatures and in this past week’s episode, XX, Rackham, Vane and Teach’s first meet up carries an strong intensity.

Jack explains his plan to defend Nassau if and when the English arrive and Teach has only one question…why? Why defend the island? Jack’s answer is simple and brilliantly calls back to other famous pirates that have yet to appear, grounding the show once again in reality.
“Because Henry Avery set camp here and said this is a place for free men. Because you sailed from here makes this place feared because Henry Jennings, Benjamin Hornigold and Sam Bellamy gave Nassau life.”

So Who Are These Founders Of Nassau that Rackham speaks highly of? Why do they and Blackbeard himself, give Nassau so much reputation? Let’s take a look…
